撮影に入る前、トム・ハンクスをはじめとした出演者たちは、リアルな演技をするために元海兵隊大尉のデイル・ダイの協力の下、ブートキャンプ同等の訓練を10日間受けさせられた。その間は教官がいきなり俳優達に向かって発砲（空砲）したり、当時の兵士達が持ち歩いていた道具と装備を全て背負わせて延々と行軍させたりと内容的にとても厳しいものであった。ライアン一等兵役のマット・デイモンはこの新兵訓練の参加メンバーから意図的に外された。これは10日間の過酷な訓練を通じて救出隊のメンバーにマット・デイモン＝ライアン一等兵に対する反感を植えつけるためであった。俳優らは2週間にも及ぶ戦闘場面の撮影に酷使され、疲労の色も濃く、撮影当初の和んだ気分も消えて荒んでいた上に、現場の進行を知らない新進気鋭のデイモンが新兵よろしく撮影途中に現場到着した時には、当初の意図通り剣呑な雰囲気となり、それらとの相乗効果でリアルで緊迫した演技へと集約され、作品テーマの一部に組み込まれる。
